This drink was created after I read Willa Cather’s My Antonia. Vivid, natural imagery spills from the book. I couldn’t help but remember times I spent exploring outdoors as a kid. Summer nights when the air just turned from hot to cool, and the world was noisy and alive.
There are many wonderful passages in the book, but this drink was specifically inspired by one where the main characters are sitting outside while lightning cracks in the distance. The boy asks the girl why she had to change. She says life is different for her.
I recommend you drink this while watching a storm from safe cover, ideally with someone you care for.
(Note: Feel free to scale ingredient costs up and down to fit your budget. These are the brands/types we used.)
2 oz. bourbon (Four Roses)
1 oz. strawberry shrub
3/4 oz. Galliano
1/4 oz. lemon juice
Peaty Scotch (Laphroaig 10 year)
Shake all ingredients except the scotch over ice, and double strain into a rocks glass with one large ice cube. Mist the scotch over the top. Flame is optional.
This is a complex drink, with each flavor taking a turn in the spotlight. The scotch mist is meant to mimic the electric air of a lightning storm.
